It’s always a little wobbly, January, then you kind of find your groove early February – just me? I’m always desperate to get away for a weekend at this time of year. Snowdrops are pushing through but it’s cold and the fire roars on.
A quick recharge does the world of good! We chose Heckfield Place to bolt to as it’s pretty close (Windsor Castle is just noticeable across the 400-acre estate) it’s known for great food, cocktails and rural enough for you to trust that you’re going to sleep well!
Surrounded by manicured lawns, walled gardens and ancient woodland, elegant 18th century house Heckfield Place looks somewhat imposing but don’t be alarmed!. Enter through the high-ceilinged entrance hall, the combination of light-bathed interiors, Scandi-chic simplicity, beautifully framed views and Georgian antiques will stop you in your tracks.
This theme of stillness and enjoying every moment is replicated beautifully throughout the rest of the hotel. The bedrooms are masterpieces of relaxed repose from the sage green walls, faded rugs, bunches of dried herbs to the carefully selected literature by your bed.
Freestanding tubs come cushioned with rugs over cosy heated floors and the mini-bars are a lovely menagerie of homemade cordials, freshly baked biscuits, loose leaf tea and Allpress coffee made with a go-slow percolator.
Come evening, you’ll probably want to head to the midnight-blue Moon Bar for pre-dinner drinks. In their own words: “ Inspired by the lunar phases, our Moon Bar Cocktails are unique to Heckfield in concept, presentation and – most importantly – flavour. Best tasted after sunset”.
Try the Cherry Moon, sour cherry spirit, lapsang souchong bitters, egg, lemon and lime. Absolutely gorgeous but not cheap! Or, choose a Hip Hip Hooray cocktail made with Heckfield’s spice remedy and rosehip syrup or go for a Clear Mary (with or without vodka) which is made using fresh heritage tomatoes and a range of garden herbs.

Gyngell, of Petersham Nurseries fame.
Big on local and seasonal with slow-food headlining the menu, you’ll be amazed how good humble vegetable or tomato can taste.
After breakfast (the green juice is spot-on), wander the grounds. Follow the tree trail through the woods, have dip in the lake (if you’re feeling brave) or admire the rows of flowers grown for the house, plus all those beautiful vegetables you were enjoying.
Look out for events at Heckfiled’s ‘Assembly’ – a space for curious minds to discover more on a range of topics from cocktail making, biodynamics or a tutored wine-tasting afternoon with their head sommelier. It’s worth remembering that you can watch a film in the cosy cinema – check out if they’re showing a recent art-house or blockbuster and share a lovely bottle of Corton Pougets, Grand Cru Domaine Rapet 2012 (£135)
Heckfield is due to open its spa this year which will be worth checking out. Either way, you’ll leave Heckfield feeling soulfully invigorated, with more than a few interior design ideas. Until next time.
